Ai no Nagare (The Flow of Indigo)

Ai no Nagare brings together ten artists in a shared exploration of indigo as material, memory, and a cultural bridge between Australia and Japan.

Tokushima, home of Awa-ai (Japanese Indigo), has long been a centre of indigo cultivation and dyeing. Indigo here is a practice shaped by soil, fermentation, time, and touch. Across the ocean, Australia also carries deep histories of plant knowledge, textile experimentation, and contemporary material practices. In this exhibition, indigo becomes a current flowing between these two places, binding place to place.

The title Ai no Nagare carries layered meaning. “Ai” speaks to indigo, and also to love and connection. “Nagare” suggests movement. Movement of water, of trade routes, of migration, and of knowledge passed across generations. Indigo itself moves: through cultivation, through vats, through fabric, through skin. It stains, transforms, and records touch. It is both ancient and present.

Bringing Australian artists in dialogue with Tokushima’s indigo heritage relays harmony and resonance. It brings together a collection of stories through land, labor, ecology and identity.

Ai no Nagare invites viewers to consider indigo beyond a pigment and as a living connector. A flow between nations. A shared breath of color. A reminder that materials carry histories, and that through making, we continue their journey.

藍の流れ（Ai no Nagare / The Flow of Indigo）

「藍の流れ」は、十人のアーティストが藍を素材、記憶、そしてオーストラリアと日本を結ぶ文化の架け橋として共に探求する展覧会です。

阿波藍の里、徳島は、長年にわたり藍の栽培と染色の中心地として知られています。ここでの藍は、土、発酵、時間、手の感覚によって形作られる営みです。海の向こう、オーストラリアにも植物知識やテキスタイルの実験、現代的な素材表現の深い歴史があります。本展では、藍がこの二つの土地の間を流れる「流れ」となり、場所と場所を結びます。

タイトルの「藍の流れ」には多層的な意味があります。「藍」は文字通り藍色を示すと同時に、愛やつながりも象徴しています。「流れ」は、水の動き、交易路、移動、世代を越えた知識の伝達を示唆します。藍そのものも流れます。栽培を経て、甕の中を通り、生地を染め、肌に触れる。染め、変化させ、触れた痕跡を刻む。古くて新しい存在です。

オーストラリアのアーティストを徳島の藍の伝統と対話させることで、比較ではなく、調和と共鳴を生み出します。土地、労働、環境、アイデンティティを通した、多様な物語の集まりがここにあります。

「藍の流れ」は、藍を単なる顔料としてではなく、生きたつながりとして捉えるよう、鑑賞者を誘います。国を超えて流れるひとつの色、共鳴する呼吸。素材が歴史を宿し、私たちの手によってその旅が続いていくことを思い起こさせます。
